Last week at work my boss handed me a self evaluation form to fill in, and it got me thinking. I’ve been working in the retail industry for almost a year and a half now a scary thought as I never planned on being there that long but anyway. So….I wondered what have I learnt in this time??? Probably nothing that’s suitable for an application form CV or the self evaluation form but interesting none the less.
- Some people have no inhibitions and will quite happily parade out onto the shop floor in their undies to get a different size.
- Don’t always judge an outfit by how it looks on the hanger. Some of my best and most loved uniforms (sorry business wear) have been the ones I or someone else thought looked rubbish on the hanger.
- No matter how late the shop shuts the most awkward customer will always be the very last one.
- Choosing an outfit for a wedding for yourself is tricky, for someone else it’s near enough impossible. (Especially when the conversation begins with “I’m looking for a wedding outfit but I have no idea what I want”)
- Shoplifters will try anything once…..or twice. Also they seem to think sales assistants are idiots.
- The minute you put stock on a running rail everyone gravitates towards it, put the same stock on a stand on the floor and no one bothers about it. Probably worried they’re missing something
- Same can be said for the sale. Some days no one bothers about it until you go to tidy it and then you have to fight to avoid getting crushed and trampled.
- When you try to chat with some customers they will look at you as if you’ve suddenly grown an extra head. Some will chat a little and then run a mile probably in case you try to sell them something. However there’s always a few willing to have a proper chat with you no matter how random the conversation and they’re always the ones that make you feel so much better on a rubbish day.
- Broken clippy trouser hangers are very useful for holding the mannequins trousers up. (The only ones that fit are size eights and we very rarely have eights or belts to hold them up instead.)
- There’s something rather creepy and sinister about the mannequins and you almost expect them to come alive half way through dressing them.
Ok so not exactly ground breaking stuff but made me giggle anyway. Although I have days that I hate my job a lot of the time it can be quite entertaining.
